Mark S. Agnew, CEO
Mr. Agnew founded Eyeglasses.com in 1999, and built the company into the internet's leading retail store selling quality eyeglasses, prescription lenses, and sunglasses. Eyeglasses.com operates on a service principle that offers customers significant savings, high quality frames and lenses, large selection, self-help tools, fairness, and kindness.
Through 1999, Mr. Agnew was a Vice President at Lehman Brothers, where he managed the Emerging Markets Corporate Bond Research group of 23 research analysts. The research group followed a diverse array of companies across the most important Emerging Markets of Latin America, Asia, and the former Soviet Republics. Prior to Lehman Brothers, Mr. Agnew was a Managing Director at Bear, Stearns, managing the Emerging Markets Corporate Bond Research group. Mr. Agnew was designated an All-Star Research analyst by Institutional Investor Magazine for several years, reaching the #1 position.
Through 1993, Mr. Agnew was a research analyst at Credit, Research & Trading of Greenwich, CT, a boutique firm specializing in bankrupt and distressed U.S. fixed income securities. From 1984-1988, Mr. Agnew was a Vice President at Drexel Burnham Lambert, and Legg, Mason, Wood, Walker in the private client services divisions. Mr. Agnew received a BA at Vassar College in Art History, and an MBA at The University of Chicago.
Mr. Agnew enjoys mountain climbing, meditation, natural farming, helping the homeless and hungry, and family time.
James Hilford, COO
Mr. Hilford has been President and COO of Eyeglasses.com since 2002. He brings 22 years of operations, management, business development, marketing and customer service experience to Eyeglasses.com. Since joining the company, James has made significant contributions to the comprehensive operations and fulfillment activities and is largely responsible for the company’s A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
Prior to joining Eyeglasses.com, Mr. Hilford gained internet, operations and marketing expertise as President of Bluefly, the online discount retailer of high-end designer apparel and home accessories. Mr. Hilford was among the leadership team that launched Bluefly and took it public in 1995. Mr. Hilford was President of Pivot Rules which later evolved into Bluefly; Pivot Rules is acknowledged as the company that created and pioneered the golf lifestyle sportswear concept.
Mr. Hilford began his career in strategic marketing and advertising roles at DDB Needham where he managed teams instrumental in national media planning and buying for accounts such as Hershey, Mobil Oil, and Chanel. He also orchestrated and led a comprehensive nine-month training program for incoming recent college graduates.
Mr. Hilford received a Bachelors Degree from Franklin and Marshall College. He lives in Connecticut with his wife, their two daughters and three retrievers. Mr. Hilford is a Lieutenant with the volunteer fire department and coach to two softball teams.
