Who Is Lilly Pulitzer?
Lillian McKim was born in New York City in the 1930s and she was an original in every sense of the word. After she attended Miss Porter's school with her good friend and future first lady Jacqueline Kennedy she went to Kentucky to go to work for the Frontier Nurses Service. She shunned all the debuts and soirees of New York City. She was riding donkeys on the frontier in Kentucky! When she fell in love with Peter Pulitzer instead of having a big wedding celebration they decided to elope. After they eloped there was no wedding celebration, instead they moved to Palm Beach Florida.
Lilly opened up a juice stand as a side business. Her husband Peter had some orange groves in South Florida and Lily started selling boxes of oranges to all the kitchen staffs of Palm Beach. After doing this for a while she began to design sleeveless dresses and have them made for her. Her good friend Jackie, now the First Lady was photographed wearing one of Lilly's dresses while on vacation. The dress Jackie was wearing was made of kitchen curtain material and the photograph made Lilly's dress an immediate sensation. The dresses Lilly designed and made became all the rage among the Palm Beach socialites and celebrities.
Lilly Pulizer - Designer
Lately would start opening stores where ever she had friends. She started with the other popular resort towns in America, especially along the East Coast. Now, people celebrate Lilly every day by wearing her bright, spill-proof prints and her name has become a legacy. Her fashions are designed similar to her outlook on life, which is "do things your own way," "be yourself" and to this very day, she designs every print and pattern in her print studio. She begins each season with a color palette, always bright and spill proof and from this she develops prints and patterns that bring her brand to life. Her designers sketch, draw, marker, watercolor, and block print every tidbit of the line. All of it is original artwork and they always carry on the tradition of hiding Lilly in every print. Lilly's team finds inspiration from everywhere, from Palm Beach, visiting art museums, strolling through gardens, and spending days on the beach. They are always exploring and painting.
