Prada’s History

Prada is one of the world’s largest and best-known design houses, based in Milan, and founded in 1913 by Mario Prada. The Prada family manufactured and designed primarily leather goods all the way through the 1970’s, still a small company. In the late 1970’s, Miuccia Prada began expanding the line under an image of “anti-status” as a response to the super-status positioning of Louis Vuitton, and this originality developed Prada into the super powerhouse it is today.

The Company grew to $674 million in sales by the end of the 1990s, but then became interested in purchasing other brands similar to the LVMH model. Prada began acquiring interests in Gucci, Fendi, Helmut Lang, Jill Sander, and Miu Miu. Although the company was growing rapidly, it was still in debt. By 2015, Prada sales were approximately $3.8 billion. Prada eyewear began in the 1970's with sunglasses, and then evolved into eyeglasses.
