Headquartered in Manhattan, they began in 1818 starting out as a small family business. Claudio Del Vecchio now owns the company and has recently introduced a luxury line of women's clothing. In 1833, his four sons, Elisha, Daniel, Edward and John would inherit the family business and in 1850 they would change the name of the company from H. & D. H. Brooks & Co. to Brooks Brothers. In the mid-1800s, the company would outfit then Pres. Abraham Lincoln and would consider him as one of their loyal customers and at Lincoln's second inauguration, he wore a coat tailored specially for him by Brooks Brothers. On the day of his assassination, Lincoln was wearing a coat along with a Brooks Brothers suit. They have outfitted 39 of 44 presidents including Herbert Hoover, Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George HW Bush, and Bill Clinton. Franklin Roosevelt wore his Brooks Brothers collared cape and Fedora in 1945 at the Yalta conference. Winthrop Holly Brooks would run the company from 1936 until 1946, the year the company would be sold to Julius Garfinkle&Co. Winthrop would remain with the company as a figurehead and after the acquisition, John Wood would become the director of Brooks Brothers.
